White-rumped swift (Amatsubume)

Japanese: アマツバメ(雨燕) - アマツバメ（英語表記）white‐rumped swift

A bird of the Apodiformes order, family Apodidae, it is the most common species of swift in Japan (illustration). It breeds in the temperate and subarctic zones of East Asia and spends the winter from Southeast Asia to Australia. In Japan, it arrives slightly later than barn swallows, from mid-April to early May, and is a summer bird that leaves from mid-September to late November. It breeds in groups on exposed vertical cliffs and coastal caves in mountainous areas from Kyushu to Hokkaido. During migration, it also appears over farmland and urban areas in the plains, but does not fly low like swallows on clear days.

アマツバメ目アマツバメ科の鳥で，日本のアマツバメ類の中ではもっとも多い普通種（イラスト）。東アジアの温帯，亜寒帯で繁殖し，東南アジアからオーストラリアにかけて越冬する。日本ではツバメよりやや遅れて4月中旬～5月上旬に渡来し，9月中旬～11月下旬に渡去する夏鳥で，九州から北海道までの各地の山岳部の岩の露出した垂直な崖地や海岸の洞窟で集団繁殖する。渡りの途中では平野部の畑地や市街地の上空にも現れるが，晴天のときはツバメのように低空を飛ぶことはない。
