A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. Commonly known as Zoshu. Named Kataseki. Pen names Rakuzan and Nikoro. His multiple names were given to him by Hino Sukeeda. He was the son of Watanabe Shigekata, a priest at Furutomo Shrine in Nakatsu, Buzen (Oita Prefecture). By order of his father, he was adopted by his older brother Iwami no Kami Shigetaka and inherited the family line. In 1776 (An'ei 5), he left his family and went to Kyoto, where he studied Chinese classics and became acquainted with Yori Shunsui and Shibano Kuriyama. In 1782 (Tenmei 2), he became a pupil of Arakida Kyuro in Ise, where he studied Japanese classics. In 1784, he became a pupil of the Takakura family, a family of clothing merchants, and also studied waka poetry under Hino Sukeeda. In 1785, he became a pupil of Motoori Norinaga. Norinaga sent him a poem of deep trust, saying, "Please guide me through the roads of Yamato, a path that the people of the capital have yet to tread." In 1790, he became a professor of Japanese classics at the Nakatsu domain school, Shinshukan, and trained many students. He was called one of the three great masters of Kyushu along with Aoyagi Tanenobu and Nagase Masayuki.

江戸後期の国学者。通称造酒。名堅石。号,楽山,二幸楼。重名は日野資枝により与えられた名。豊前中津(大分県)の古表神社神官渡辺重堅の子。父の命により兄石見守重喬の猶子となり家を継ぐ。安永5(1776)年家を脱して上京,漢籍を学び頼春水,柴野栗山らと交わる。天明2(1782)年,伊勢の荒木田久老に入門し国学を学ぶ。4年,衣紋家の高倉家へ入門,また日野資枝に歌道入門。7年本居宣長に入門。宣長には「都人まだふみなれぬ足引のやまとの道は君しるべせよ」と厚い信頼の歌を寄せられた。寛政2(1790)年,中津藩校進脩館の国学教授となり,多くの門人を育成した。青柳種信,長瀬真幸と共に九州三大家と称された。<参考文献>松本義一「渡辺重名と本居家との交渉」
