Hida Mountains

Japanese: 飛驒山脈 - ひださんみゃく
Hida Mountains
Located in the northern part of the mountainous region in central Honshu, this mountain range is the main part of the so-called Japanese Alps, also known as the Northern Alps. It is a large mountain range that rises sharply from Oyashirazu on the coast of the Sea of Japan and continues across four prefectures: Niigata, Toyama, Nagano, and Gifu. It stretches about 70 km from north to south and 25 km from east to west, with peaks of 3,000 m above sea level, the highest being Okuhotakadake at 3,190 m. It was designated as Chubu Sangaku National Park in 1934. The eastern side of the Hida Mountains drops steeply into the great rift valley called the Fossa Magna, which divides Honshu into northeastern Japan and southwestern Japan, while the Hida Highlands continue on the western side at a slightly lower altitude.
