A city in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city straddles the floodplain on the north bank of the Tama River and the Musashino Plateau. It is served by the Nambu Line, Musashino Line, Keio Electric Railway, Seibu Tamagawa Line, and the Chuo Expressway. The central city was the location of the ancient Musashi provincial capital. During the Edo period, it developed as a post town on the Koshu Kaido road and as a town in front of the shrine gates of Okunitama Shrine. Munitions factories were established there during World War II, which promoted industrialization and residential development, and it developed rapidly after the war. Industries such as electrical appliances and food are thriving, and the value of manufactured goods shipped was 889.8 billion yen (2003), making it the second largest in Tokyo. It is home to Tama Cemetery, Tokyo Racecourse, and Fuchu Prison. The annual festival of Okunitama Shrine in May is famous as the Kurayami Festival. It has an area of ​​29.43 km2 and a population of 255,506 (2010).

It was once the location of the Bingo provincial capital. The city center is on the left bank of the Ashida River, and it is an inland industrial city centered on local industries such as nationally famous Fuchu furniture, as well as sewing, machinery, and metals. In recent years, the development of industrial and residential complexes has progressed on the outskirts of the city. Specialties include Bingo kasuri, paulownia wood boxes, and non-ferrous metal die-cast products. Tourist attractions include Kawasa Gorge, Nanatsuike Pond, and Saburo Falls. It merged with Kamijo Town, Kouno District in April 2004. 195.75 km2 . Population: 42,563 (2010).
