Tabirako - Tabirako

A biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It grows in drained rice fields between rice crops. It is said that the Lamium amplexicaule, one of the seven herbs of spring, is this species. The pinnate leaves form a beautiful rosette, and hence the name Tabirako. It is also called Konitabirako. When cut, it exudes a milky liquid. From April to May, it grows a flower stalk about 10 cm long at an angle, and produces small yellow flower heads about 7 mm in diameter, sparsely. The flower heads are made up of only ray flowers, which open in the morning and close in the evening, and when they bear fruit, they turn downward. The achenes have no pappus and have small projections at the tips. It is found in Honshu, Kyushu, the Korean peninsula, and China. Young leaves are picked and boiled for food. The cucumber cucumber, a member of the Violaceae family, is sometimes called Tabirako.

キク科の二年草。稲作の合間を縫い、水の落ちた田に生える。春の七草のホトケノザは本種であるといわれる。羽状に分裂した葉がきれいなロゼットをなし、そのようすから田平子と名づけられた。コオニタビラコともいう。切ると乳液が出る。4～5月ごろ10センチメートルほどの花茎を斜めに伸ばし、径7ミリメートルほどの小さな黄色の頭花をまばらにつける。頭花は舌状花のみからなり、朝開き夕方閉じ、結実すると下を向く。痩果(そうか)には冠毛がなく、先端に小突起がある。本州、九州、朝鮮半島、中国に分布する。若葉を摘み、ゆでて食用とする。なお、ムラサキ科のキュウリグサをタビラコとよぶこともある。
