A city in northeastern Saudi Arabia facing the Arabian Gulf (Persian Gulf). It is also called Dhahran or Zahrān. It is located near the border with Bahrain, across from Bahrain Island. It has a population of 98,900 (2003 estimate). It developed rapidly after oil fields were discovered in Dammam, about 15 km north, in 1938. In 1950, pipelines were built from Abqaiq and Ras Tanura to Bahrain and Lebanon, and in 1951 a railway was built to connect the city with the capital, Riyadh. It is home to the headquarters of Aramco (now Saudi Aramco), which was nationalized in 1980 and is responsible for most of Saudi Arabia's oil production. There is also an international airport on the outskirts. [Motoko Katakura] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
