The Okamoto Daihachi Incident

Japanese: 岡本大八事件 - おかもとだいはちじけん
The Okamoto Daihachi Incident
In 1609, Arima Harunobu sank the Portuguese ship Nossa Senhora da Graça (also known as Madre de Deus) in Nagasaki, and as a reward he wanted to regain his former territory. To that end, he approached Okamoto Daihachi, a vassal of Honda Masazumi, a powerful aide to Tokugawa Ieyasu, and offered him a bribe. When the truth of the matter was revealed, Daihachi uncovered Harunobu's attempted assassination of the Nagasaki magistrate, and in 1612 Daihachi was burned at the stake and Harunobu was stripped of his title. As both were Christians, this became the fuse that led to the issuance of the ban on Christianity.
