…He saw the paintings of the Barbizon School at the Paris World's Fair and found in their powerful naturalism the path they should take in the future. Meanwhile, theorist Diego Martelli (1839-96) supported the role of the macchia by providing a theoretical justification for the technique: "The three-dimensional effect of an object can only be expressed through the relationship between light and dark, and this relationship can only be effectively achieved through the accurate use of the macchia." While the French Impressionists, who also started from the Barbizon School and made full use of pointillism, tried to reconstruct the outside world as seen through their own senses and vision using the element of brushstrokes, the Macchiaios only tried to express a space with a perspective order using light and dark, and the macchia was merely a means to that end. …
