Title of a Noh piece. Fourth piece. Author unknown. When Sasaki Moritsuna (waki), who distinguished himself as the vanguard in the Battle of Fujito, issues a notice in his new territory, Kojima in Bizen, calling for anyone with a lawsuit to come forward, a middle-aged woman (mae-shite) steps forward and expresses her resentment for the murder of her son. When questioned by the woman, Moritsuna confesses that he was shown the shallows of the sea by a young fisherman and distinguished himself as the vanguard, but that he drowned the fisherman in the sea out of fear of being told. The woman is the fisherman's mother. Moritsuna apologizes for his wrongdoing, promises to hold a funeral, and sends the woman home (intermission). As Moritsuna performs a mourning performance with a musical instrument, the ghost of the fisherman (go-shite) appears and reenacts the scene of the fisherman being drowned in the sea and carried away, but he eventually attains nirvana thanks to the merit of the funeral. Based on the short story of Moritsuna's exploits from "The Tale of the Heike," this Noh play is full of dramatic twists and turns, focusing on the theme of the anger of the common people who have become victims of military achievements.
