Taniguchi Tomb
<br /> An ancient burial mound in Hamae-cho, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. It is a keyhole-shaped burial mound located on a hill 20-40 meters above sea level that branches off southwest from Tonbo- yama , 535 meters above sea level, at the eastern end of the Karatsu Plain. It was designated a national historic site in 1941 (Showa 16). The total length of the burial mound is 77 meters. It has two stone chambers in which long-shaped stone coffins are placed in the circular rear section, and a boat -shaped stone coffin is buried in the front section. The two stone chambers were previously thought to be pit-type chambers, but a survey in 1989 (Heisei 1) revealed that they were pit-type side-entry type chambers with an entrance at the front. In addition, a cylindrical haniwa ( clay clay figure ) fragment unearthed at the survey revealed that it was built around the end of the 4th century, making it the oldest burial mound with a pit-type side-entry type stone chamber. Excavated items include seven bronze mirrors, eleven stone bracelets, ironware, and jewels, and together with the long stone sarcophagus, it is a luxurious tomb that has strong Kinai-style elements, but is also said to be important in understanding the inflow and development of Korean kofun culture, with its horizontal-entrance stone chamber. It is about a 20 -minute walk from Hamasaki Station on the JR Chikuhi Line.
