An ethnic group living on the island of Madagascar. It is certain that by the beginning of the 1st century, Austronesian-speaking Indonesian tribes had crossed the sea and reached eastern Africa, particularly Madagascar, judging from their characteristics, language, and culture. They speak Malagasy, which belongs to the Indonesian languages. They live in the Tanara forests of the central highlands, moving around and cultivating upland rice using slash-and-burn farming, and building villages. Kinship relations were traditionally considered to be patrilineal, but a recent theory has been put forward that they were originally bilineal with a patrilineal tendency. Their religion is centered on ancestor worship, and they hold elaborate funerals. Around the 18th century, they learned rice paddy cultivation from the neighboring Betileo people, and there was an increasing tendency for rice paddies to be privatized, for families to be unitary, and for people to settle down.
