A city in central Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1953. It occupies the northern part of the Yubari Mountains in the Sorachi River and Ashibetsu River basins. The Nemuro Main Line runs through it. As a coal-producing city in the northern part of the Ishikari coalfield, it developed rapidly after coal mining development began in 1915, but the main mine, Mitsui Ashibetsu Mine, closed in 1992. Since then, an industrial complex has been formed to attract businesses, and factories for electronics, precision machinery, textiles, lumber, and more are located here. The lowlands along the Sorachi River have been converted into rice paddies, and wheat, beans, potatoes, and other crops are also produced. In 1988, the Environment Agency designated it a "village where stars fall," and tourism development is also underway. Area: 865.04 km2 . Population: 16,628 (2010).
