Yoshimaro Tanaka

Geneticist. Born in Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from the College of Agriculture of Tohoku Imperial University and became a professor at Kyushu Imperial University (1924). Retired as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture (1945). Principal of Fukuoka Prefectural Agricultural College (1947-1949). Later served as Director of the First Department of the National Institute of Genetics (1949-1956). Known worldwide for his genetic research on silkworms, he discovered that the sex chromosomes of silkworms are ZW-ZZ and that genetic recombination does not occur in female silkworms. One of the founders of the Japanese Society of Genetics, he also served as its president (1939-1940). Member of the Japan Academy (since 1957). He raised many students with a solid and dedicated academic style. He has written many books, but his most representative works include "Genetics," "Silkworm Science," "Genetics of Domestic Silkworms," ​​and "Basic Genetics."

遺伝学者。長野県の生まれ。東北帝国大学農科大学を卒業して九州帝国大学教授となる（1924）。農学部長を務めて退官（1945）。福岡県立農業専門学校校長（1947～1949）。のち国立遺伝学研究所第一部長を務めた（1949～1956）。カイコの遺伝学的研究で世界的に知られ、なかでもカイコの性染色体式がZW‐ZZであること、またカイコの雌では遺伝子組換えがおこらないことを発見した。日本遺伝学会創立者の一人で、会長も務めた（1939～1940）。日本学士院会員（1957年以降）。堅実、篤学の学風で多くの子弟を育てた。著書は多いが、『遺伝学』『蚕学』『家蚕遺伝学』『基礎遺伝学』などが代表的著作である。
