Danae (English spelling) Danaē

In Greek mythology, she is the daughter of Acrisius, King of Argos. Her father, who was already elderly, longed for a son, but was informed by the oracle of Delphi that he would be killed by the boy born to Danae. He then locked Danae in a bronze room, but Zeus, who was in love with Danae, transformed himself into golden rain and entered through the roof of the room, causing her to give birth to Perseus. Acrisius, who did not believe that the baby was Zeus's child, sealed the mother and child in a box and threw it into the sea, and the box washed up on the island of Seriphos, where it was saved by Dictes (meaning "net"), the younger brother of the island's king, Polydectes. However, Polydectes sent Perseus to slay the Gorgon, and tried to take Danae for himself. When Perseus returned home and learned of his mother's plight, he showed the Gorgon's head to Polydectes and his men, and turned them all to stone. The story of Danae's suffering has also been the subject of tragedies, and one of the most famous is Simonides' Lament, which depicts Danae nursing the infant Perseus inside the box.

ギリシア神話のアルゴス王アクリシオスの娘。すでに高齢であった父アクリシオスは、男子が生まれるのを切望していたが、デルフォイの神託から自分がダナエの生む男の子に殺されることを知らされる。そこでダナエを青銅の部屋に閉じ込めるが、ダナエに恋慕していたゼウスが黄金の雨に身を変じて部屋の屋根から侵入し、彼女にペルセウスを生ませる。嬰児(えいじ)がゼウスの子であることを信じないアクリシオスは、母子を箱に封じ込めて海へ投げ入れ、その箱はセリフォスの島へ漂着して島の王ポリデクテスの弟ディクテス（「網」の意）に救われる。しかし、ポリデクテスはペルセウスをゴルゴン退治に行かせておいて、ダナエを自分のものにしようとした。そのため帰国して母の苦境を知ったペルセウスは、ポリデクテスとその一味にゴルゴンの頭を見せ、彼らをことごとく石にしてしまった。ダナエの受難物語は悲劇の素材にもなっているが、箱の中のダナエが嬰児ペルセウスをあやす姿を歌ったシモニデスの哀歌は、とくに有名である。
