The town occupies the area of Nakaniikawa County, Toyama Prefecture, from the eastern Toyama Plain to near Harinoki Pass on the border with Nagano Prefecture. It includes Kurobe Gorge, the Tateyama mountain range, and the right bank of the Jōganji River. The central settlement, Gohyakkoku, has been a market town since ancient times, and Iwakuraji and Ashikuraji at the mouth of the valley are centers of faith in Tateyama, and are famous as the base for climbing Mt. Tateyama and settlements for mountain guides. It is served by the Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Line and the Hokuriku Expressway. Area: 307.29 km2 . Population: 27,466 (2010).
