Bellflower

Japanese: スズムシソウ

A perennial plant of the orchid family that grows in mountain forests from Hokkaido to Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. It has an oval pseudobulb on the ground. It has two opposite leaves that grow at the base and are elliptical. In summer, a flower stalk 20-30 cm high emerges from between the leaves, and produces about 10 brownish purple flowers, each about 1 cm long, on the upper half. The lip petal is wide, reaching a diameter of 1.5 cm, and looks like a bell cricket with its wings spread, hence the name.

北海道〜九州，朝鮮半島の山地林内にはえるラン科の多年草。地表に卵円形の偽球茎がある。葉は２枚対生して根生し，楕円形。夏，葉間から高さ20〜30cmの花茎を出し，上半に褐紫色で長さ約1cmの花を10個内外つける。唇弁(しんべん)は幅が広く，径1.5cmに達し，スズムシが翅(はね)を広げたように見えるので，この名がある。
