Abnormal seismic zone - Ijōshinki

Generally, earthquake motion is stronger the closer to the epicenter. However, there are cases where abnormally large seismic intensity is observed over a wide area, even if it is relatively far from the epicenter. This area is called an anomalous seismic zone. Earthquakes that cause anomalous seismic zones tend to have deep epicenters, and the Pacific coastal areas of Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kanto are prone to becoming anomalous seismic zones. If a material with low attenuation exists near the epicenter and spreads in a certain direction, the waves emitted in that direction will travel far without being attenuated, causing stronger vibrations than waves that pass through a material with high attenuation, even though they are near the epicenter. This is thought to be the cause of the creation of anomalous seismic zones. This material with low attenuation is said to be the Pacific Plate, about 100 kilometers thick, which is subducting under the Japanese archipelago near the Japan Trench.

地震動は一般に震央に近いほど強い。しかし震央から比較的遠いにもかかわらず広い範囲で異常に大きな震度が観測されることがある。この地域を異常震域という。異常震域をおこす地震は深い震源をもつ地震に多く、北海道、東北、関東地方の太平洋岸の地域は異常震域になりやすい。減衰の少ない物質が震源付近に存在し、ある特定の方向へ広がっているとすると、その方向へ放射された波は減衰されないで遠くまで伝わり、震央付近であるにもかかわらず減衰の大きい物質内を通った波より強い振動を引き起こす。これが異常震域をつくりだす原因であると考えられている。この減衰の少ない物質は日本海溝付近で日本列島の下に沈み込んでいる厚さ100キロメートル程度の太平洋プレートであるといわれている。
