A method of mathematical statistics for quantitatively grasping a set of things is called statistical estimation. For example, consider a set of a very large number of things, such as the height of adult males in Japan or a large number of electrical resistors manufactured in a certain production process. This set is called a population. A population can be virtually defined as all products that will be manufactured in a certain process in the future, so it is generally impossible to list all the elements, and this is replaced by describing their statistical properties. Usually, they are described using a small number of parameters, such as the mean μ and the variance ^σ2 .

事物の集合を定量的に把握するための数理統計学の方法を統計的推定という。例えば日本の成人男子の身長とか，ある生産工程で製造される大量の電気抵抗器など，非常に多くの事物の集合を考える。この集合を母集団と呼ぶ。母集団はある工程で今後製造される製品全体というように仮想的に定められることもあるので，一般に要素を全部書き出すことは不可能であり，統計的性質を記述することによってそれにかえる。ふつうは平均μ，分散σ²など少数のパラメーターで記述することが行われる。
