Minnesota [State] - Minnesota
A state in the north-central part of the United States. Abbreviated as Minn., MN. A flat plateau 300-500m above sea level, with numerous glacial lakes scattered around it, caused by glacial erosion. The northeast faces Lake Superior. Agriculture and livestock farming are important, with the northwest being a wheat region and the southeast being a fruit and dairy region, with apples and butter being the major products. It is one of the leading iron ore producing areas in the United States, centered around the Mesabi Range, and is shipped from Duluth on the shores of Lake Superior. Industries such as food processing, leather, paper, pulp, electronic equipment, and plastics are thriving. The state was explored by the French in the 17th century, and in 1803 almost the entire state became a US territory, with the first colonies in 1819. It joined the Union in 1858. The state capital is St. Paul. The largest city is Minneapolis. 206,232 km2 . 5,457,173 people (2014).
