…The entry for December 776 in the Shoku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan), mentions the Oku District of Mutsu Province, and the Konjaku Monogatarishu (Tales of Times Now Past and Present) Volume 20, Chapter 10 states that the "gunji who served in the Oku District" of Shinano Province. In Shinano, the northern districts of Sarashina, Hanishina, Minauchi, Takai, and other districts were called Oku Shinano, and even during the Warring States period, there were instances of the terms Shinshu Oku District and Shino no Oku District. In Hitachi, too, the northern districts of Naka East and West, Kuji East and West, Satsuma East and West, and Taga, which were under the control of the Satake clan, were called the Oku Seven Districts at the end of the Heian period and the beginning of the Kamakura period. …
