Daśaharā (English spelling)

Japanese: ダシャハラー（英語表記）Daśaharā

A Hindu festival. It is held for 10 days leading up to the full moon in the month of Aashvin (September to October). It celebrates the beginning of autumn and includes a pre-celebration of the autumn-sown wheat. It also includes elements of the end of work and the beginning of new work, in which tools used in each household are offered as offerings. The first nine days are called Durga Puja, during which people fast and offer hymns, music, and dance to the goddess Durga. On the final day, the idol of the goddess may be bathed in the river. This is said to be based on the story of how Durga was given weapons by all the male gods and killed the buffalo demon Mahisha, who had tormented even the gods.

ヒンドゥー教の祭りの一つ。アーシュビン月(9～10月)の満月に向けて10日間行われる。秋の始まりを祝う祭りで，秋まきの小麦の予祝を含み，またそれぞれの家業で用いる道具を供養する仕事納め，仕事始めの要素ももつ。初めの9日間はドゥルガー･プージャーと呼ばれ，人々は断食し，ドゥルガー女神に賛歌，音楽，舞踊をささげる。最終日には神像を川で沐浴させる場合もある。これはドゥルガー女神が，あらゆる男神たちから武器を贈られて，神々をも苦しめた水牛の魔マヒシャを殺した故事によるという。
