People's Will (Narodnaya volya)

A revolutionary organization formed in Russia in the summer of 1879. It was born from a split in the Narodnik revolutionary organization "Land and Freedom" Association. While the "Land Replacement" faction aimed for a social revolution through peasant uprisings in the countryside, the "People's Will" faction focused on political struggle centered on terrorist activities in the cities as an immediate tactic, and advocated a revolutionary line that would see the party overthrow the monarchy, seize power, implement universal suffrage, establish a constitutional assembly, and establish socialism. The basis of this line was the Narodnik recognition that the vast majority of Russians were peasants, and that peasants were socialist due to their communal lifestyle.

1879年の夏にロシアで結成された革命組織。ナロードニキの革命組織〈土地と自由〉結社の分裂で誕生。〈土地総割替(チョールヌイ･ペレジェル)〉派が農村の農民蜂起による社会革命を志向したのに対し，〈人民の意志〉派は都市でのテロ活動を中心とする政治闘争を当面の戦術とし，党による帝政打倒，政権奪取，普通選挙の実施，立憲議会，社会主義の樹立，という革命路線を主張した。この路線の基礎には，ロシアの国民の圧倒的多数は農民であり，農民は共同体的生活習慣によって社会主義的であるというナロードニキ特有の認識がある。
