A deciduous or evergreen tree of the family Moraceae (APG classification: Moraceae), evergreen in Okinawa and south. It grows to about 5 meters in height. The bark is grayish. The leaves are alternate and stalked, obovate or oblong, 8-20 cm long, almost entire, papery, and pale green on the underside. In the leaf axils, one or rarely two fig-like inflorescences are produced, which are obovate or globose and ripen to a purple-black color. Dioecious. In plants of the Ficus genus, the inflorescence is uniquely urn-shaped, with the apical hole covered with scales, and the flower is isolated from the outside world. Therefore, pollen transmission is carried out by parasitic small insects of the Ficus family, which are specific to the species. The inflorescences, which contain staminate flowers and male flowers caused by parasitizing wasps, are inedible, but the inflorescences of female flowers are pollinated and become edible. Most of the plants in this genus (about 800 species) are distributed in the tropics. The seeds are dispersed by birds, whose digestive juices seem to promote seed germination. Seeds seldom germinate when sown directly. They are distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, and Taiwan, west of the Kanto region.

クワ科（APG分類：クワ科）の落葉または常緑小高木で、沖縄以南では常緑。高さ約5メートル。樹皮は灰色を帯びる。葉は互生し柄があり、倒卵形ないし長楕円(ちょうだえん)形、長さ8～20センチメートル、ほぼ全縁で紙質、裏面は淡緑色。葉の腋(わき)に1個まれに2個のいちじく状花序をつけ、倒卵形ないし球形で紫黒色に熟す。雌雄異株。イチジク属の植物では、花序が特異な形の壺(つぼ)状となり、頂端の孔が鱗片(りんぺん)に覆われ、花は外界から隔離されている。そのため花粉の媒介は、種に特有のイチジクコバチ科の小昆虫が寄生して行われるという。コバチが寄生して生じる虫癭花(ちゅうえいか)と雄花とをつける花序は食べられないが、雌花の花序は受粉して実り、食用となる。この属の植物（約800種）の多くは熱帯に分布する。種子の散布は鳥によってなされ、鳥の消化液で種子の発芽が促進されるようである。直接播種(はしゅ)したのではめったに発芽しない。関東地方以西の本州、四国、九州、沖縄と、台湾に分布する。
