A carbonated soft drink that contains carbon dioxide. It is made by injecting carbon dioxide into drinking water. Since the Meiji period, natural mineral waters such as Hiranosui, which springs from Hirano Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture, have been available commercially, but today most mineral waters are artificial, made by adding inorganic salts to pure water passed through ion exchange resin and dissolving carbon dioxide. Flavorless sodas are called plain sodas and are used to dilute alcoholic beverages. Sweeteners, fruit juices, essences, etc. can also be added to make various types of soft drinks.
