Basidiomycetes, order Aphyllosteganata, family Polyporaceae. It grows on the stumps of broad-leaved trees such as plums, at the base of dead trees, and occasionally on the trunks of living trees. The pericarp of the fruiting body hardens into cork, and is also called Saiwaitake (Lucky mushroom) or Reishi (Spirit mushroom). The cap of the fruiting body is kidney-shaped, or occasionally circular. It grows laterally on a cylindrical stalk. The cap measures 5-13cm in long diameter and about 1cm thick, with a smooth, shiny pericarp of reddish brown or purple brown. The underside is yellowish-white and corky, and when mature it turns cinnamon-colored with fine circular pores. The stem is 0.6-2cm thick, 3-15cm long, and has a black, lacquered gloss. The spores are ovoid and pale yellowish brown. It is widely distributed throughout Japan and the northern hemisphere. Its interesting shape and color make it a popular ornament. This fungus is saprophytic, so it is cultivated on sawdust from hardwoods to produce mushrooms. A similar species is Magojakushi, which grows on conifers.

担子菌類ヒダナシタケ目サルノコシカケ科。ウメなどの広葉樹の切り株，枯れ木の根もと，まれに生木の幹上に生じる。子実体の殻皮がコルク化して硬くなり，サイワイタケ (幸茸) ，レイシ (霊芝) とも名づけられている。子実体の傘は腎臓形，まれに円形となる。円柱形の柄を側生する。傘の大きさは長径5～13cm，厚さ 1cmぐらい，表面の殻皮はなめらかでつやがあり，赤褐色または紫褐色。下面は黄白色，コルク質，成熟すると肉桂色を帯び，細かい円形の孔口をもつ。茎は太さ 0.6～2cm，長さ3～15cmとなり，黒色で漆を塗ったような光沢がある。胞子は卵形，淡黄褐色。日本全土，北半球に広く分布する。形，色などがおもしろいので好んで飾り物などにされる。この菌は腐生性であるので，広葉樹のおが屑に栽培してキノコをつくらせている。類似種に針葉樹に生じるマゴジャクシ (孫杓子)がある。
