An important Roman military base, capital of Upper Pannonia, located on the Danube River about 50 km downstream from Vienna, Austria. It was also the crossroads of the trade routes between Italy and the Baltic Sea and along the Danube. It was originally part of the province of Noricum, but was added to the province of Pannonia around AD 14 when the 15th Legion of Apollo moved there. In 114 AD, the 14th Legion of Mars the Twin Victorious took over as garrison. The town flourished during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, but thereafter fell into decline, and was burned down by the Germanic invasion around 400.
