(Jehovah) A mispronunciation of the Old Testament name of God, Yahweh. The Jews, following the commandment not to take God's name in vain, called him Lord (Adonai) instead of calling him by his name, but later the consonants representing Yahweh were confused with the vowels of Adonai, resulting in the pronunciation Jehovah. Recently, it is often translated as "Lord (Shu) ."

(Jehovah) 「旧約聖書」の神名「ヤハウェ」を誤読した呼び名。ユダヤ人は、神の名をみだりに唱えてはならないという戒めを守り、神の名を呼ぶ代わりに、主（アドナイ）と呼んでいたが、のちにヤハウェを表わす子音と、アドナイの母音とが混同されて、エホバという発音が生じた。最近は「主(しゅ)」と訳すことが多い。
