Setubal is the capital of the Setubal district in southwestern Portugal. It is a port city on the north shore of Setubal Bay, about 40 km southeast of Lisbon. It was the site of the royal palace during the reign of King João II (1481-95), but most of the historical buildings were lost in an earthquake in 1755. It exports salt, oranges, grapes, and wine. It also has thriving industries in fish farming and processing, automobiles, shipbuilding, cement, fertilizer, and other areas. Population: 83,548 (1991 estimate).
