The inner bark has been used for dyeing since ancient times, and the powder is also used as a stomachic. Its pharmacological effect is due to the main component, the plant base berberine, which is also the component that gives off the yellow pigment in dyes. Phellodendron amurense contains water-soluble polysaccharides that act as dye assistants and dye well on both protein and plant fibers.
