A pioneer of American studies in Japan. Born in Tokyo as the second son of English scholar Kanda Naibu. During his time at First Higher School, he was mentored by Nitobe Inazo and became a student of Uchimura Kanzo. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University, he became the first instructor of the "US Constitution, History and Diplomacy" course at the university, which he began in 1924 (Taisho 13). He taught the history of American democracy without compromising its principles throughout the prewar, wartime and postwar periods. At the same time, he worked to prevent the outbreak of the Pacific War and worked to end the war, and after the war he devoted himself to international cultural exchange. He is the author of many books, including "An Introduction to American Political History" (1931), but after the war he organized the Society for American Studies and published "The Original American History" (7 volumes), among others, to train and guide the next generation of scholars. For these achievements, he was appointed an honorary member of the American Historical Association (1965), a Person of Cultural Merit (1967), and a recipient of the Japan Foundation Award (1978).
