In April 1945, Vienna was occupied by Soviet troops who had advanced across the Reichsbrücke (Reich Bridge) over the Danube, which was temporarily renamed the Red Army Bridge. By mid-May, the whole of Austria was under the divided occupation of the four Allied powers: the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
