Fukiji Temple

This Tendai sect temple is located in Fukiura, Bungotakada city, Oita prefecture. Its mountain name is Rengesan. Its former name was Fuki Amida Temple. It is also called "Fuki Daido". According to temple legend, it was founded by Ninmon in 718 (Yoro 2). The main hall is a single-story building of three or four bays, with a Hogyo-style roof and Gyoki-buki roof, making it the oldest wooden building in Kyushu. It is a precious Amida hall that is designated as a national treasure, on a par with Byodoin's Phoenix Hall and Chusonji's Golden Hall. Inside the hall, there are murals depicting the Amida Pure Land, and together with the principal image, the seated Amida Nyorai statue, it is a national important cultural property. There are many precious stone structures around the hall, including stone monuments, stupas (both of which are prefectural cultural properties), and the Kunisaki Tower, which is unique to the Kunisaki Peninsula. The grounds are a nationally designated historic site.
