Born: Around 1300, Strasbourg
Died June 16, 1361. Strassburg. German mystic and preacher. Became a Dominican friar in 1315, studied at the University of Cologne in 1325, and was influenced by Eckhart and Seuse. He preached in Basel in 1339, Strassburg in 1347, and Cologne in 1350. During this time, he devoted himself to caring for the sick during the plague epidemic of 1348. Theologically, he adopted the position of Thomas Aquinas, but was characterized by his emphasis on the inner formation of Christians and his deep understanding of the essence of faith, theology, and the church system. At the same time, his mystical thought spoke of God's indwelling in the soul and the path to mystical ascension, as well as the virtues of love and humility that come from union with God. He influenced M. Luther, JS Bach, A. Schopenhauer, and others. His main work is Predigten (1348), a collection of sermons.

ドイツの神秘思想家，説教家。 1315年ドミニコ会修道士，25年ケルン大学に学び，エックハルトとゾイゼの影響を受けた。 39年バーゼル，47年シュトラスブルク，50年ケルンで説教家として活動した。この間，48年のペスト流行にあたっては病者の看護に献身。神学的にはトマス・アクィナスの立場に立ったが，キリスト者としての内面的形成を強調し，信仰，神学，教会制度の本質を深く認識した点に特色がみられ，一方その神秘思想においては，神の霊魂への内在，神秘的上昇の道が語られるとともに，神との一致のもたらす愛と謙遜の徳が強調されている。 M.ルター，J. S.バッハ，A.ショーペンハウアーらに影響を与えた。主著『説教集』 Predigten (1348) 。
