…From an early age, he became a traveling entertainer, singing on the streets and working as a waiter and singer in a cafe to help support his family. He tried composing by imitating others, and his first work was published in 1907. In 1911, he released “Alexander's Ragtime Band,” which became a big hit and established his reputation as a songwriter. He then wrote masterpieces such as “Always” (1925) and “Blue Skies” (1928), and worked on a series of Broadway revues, including “Watch Your Step” in 1914, and also wrote many film scores, including “Top Hat” in 1935. …
