The Alaskan wolf C. l . pambasileus of Alaska is one of the largest subspecies, reaching 75-90cm in shoulder height, sometimes 95cm. The Japanese wolf C. hodophilax (illustration), endemic to Japan, has a body length of 82-110cm and a shoulder height of 40-55cm, and is often considered a subspecies of the gray wolf because it resembles a small subspecies of the gray wolf, but it differs in many respects, such as having shorter limbs, snouts, and ears, lacking light-colored spots around the eyes, and a weaker frontal bulge on the skull.
