...The Renaud-Barraud Theatre Company, which he founded with his wife, the actress Madeleine Renaud, has embodied an important part of French theater in the 40 years since the end of the war. In addition to Claudel, they have staged new dramatic works from Camus, Sarah Clou, Montelerand, Cocteau, and Anouilh to Ionesco (The Rhino), Beckett (The Beautiful Days, Not I), Genet (The Screen), François Billetdoux (1927-91), and M. Duras (All Day in the Grove, The English Lover), while at the same time making new stagings of classics such as Molière (The Misanthrope), Racine (Bérénice, Andromaque), Marivaux (False Confession), and Shakespeare (Hamlet, translated by Gide), making them the most legitimate and greatest successors of the Cartel. Villard, a little younger than Barro and also a student of Durand, devoted himself to organizing and mobilizing a "popular audience" of factory workers and local students, and to this end, he produced monumental performances of classics ranging from Corneille (Le Cid), Molière (Don Juan), to Hugo (Louis Bras), Musset (Lorenzaccio), Shakespeare (Macbeth), and Kleist (The Prince of Homburg), with young stars known for their films such as Gérard Philipe, Maria Casares, and Alain Cuny, as well as Villard himself, who was also an actor.
