He was one of the few English playwrights and Baroque architects. Born in London as the son of a merchant, he joined the military and travelled to France. He was suspected of being a spy at one point and was arrested, but during this time he began writing plays. After returning to England, he gained popularity with The Return (premiered in 1696), which depicted the troubled relations between men and women in high society. He subsequently published comedies such as The Provoked Wife (1697) and The Conspiracy (1705), becoming one of the leading writers of English comedies of manners that began during the Restoration period. His style lacked subtlety, but his handling of the subject matter was sharp.

イギリスの劇作家で数少ないバロック建築家。商人の子としてロンドンに生まれ，軍人となってフランスに渡る。一時スパイの嫌疑をかけられ，捕らえられていたが，この間に劇作を始めた。帰国後，社交界の乱れた男女関係を描いた《逆戻り》(1696初演)によって人気を得る。続いて《挑発された妻》(1697)，《共謀》(1705)などの喜劇を発表し，王政復古期に始まるイギリス風習喜劇の代表作家の一人となる。作風は繊細さを欠くが，題材の処理に鋭さがある。
