Year of death: Bunji 1.3.24 (1185.4.25) Year of birth: 1128 A military commander in the late Heian period. Son of Taira Tadamori. Half-brother of Kiyomori. His mother was the wife of Taikenmon'in, the daughter of Ietaka, the second son of the regent Fujiwara no Michimichi. Of the siblings, Norimori was the most beloved by Kiyomori, and rose to prominence as a close aide. At Kiyomori's request, he built a residence next to the main gate of Rokuhara, and was known as Kadowaki Chunagon. In 1161, when Taira Tokitada's younger sister Shigeko gave birth to Prince Norihito, the son of Emperor Goshirakawa, Tokitada invited Norimori to join him in a plot to make the prince Crown Prince to Emperor Nijō and ensure the safety of the Taira clan, but Kiyomori suppressed this and demoted the two of them. The following year Norimori became the head of the household, and in 1168, when Emperor Takakura (Prince Norihito) ascended to the throne, he was a councilor with the rank of Shosanmi. In 1182, he was promoted to Junior Second Rank, and in the following year, he became Chunagon. During this time, he served as the governor of Awaji, Yamato, Etchu, Hitachi, and Noto, and was the feudal lord of Hitachi, Noto, and Echizen. He was an aristocratic Taira nobleman who attended court ceremonies, but in 1180, he showed his true abilities as a military commander when he attacked Onjo-ji Temple, where Prince Mochihito had taken refuge after raising an army against the Taira. After Kiyomori's death in 1181, he became the elder of the clan and assisted Taira Munemori as a staff officer for the Kyoto Shugo, but he did not actually take part in the battles, and in 1183, he fled the capital with the Taira clan and fled westward. He later took part in actual battles, fighting against Minamoto no Yoshinaka at Mizushima in Bitchu, and defeating the army of Minamoto no Yukiie in Harima. In the Battle of Ichinotani in February 1184, Norimori lost his eldest son, Michimori, and his third son, Narimori, but it is said that Norimori was on a ship off the coast of Wada with Emperor Antoku at the time. In October, he is said to have driven out the Genji clan from Nagato Province, and died in the Battle of Dannoura in 1185. <References> Yasuda Motohisa, "Portraits of the Heike"; Taga Sojun, "Essays on the Culture of the World" (Vol. 1, Courtiers and Samurai) (Kisaburo Masaki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
