Hirotsune Taira

Hirotsune Taira
?-1184 * A military commander in the late Heian period.
He succeeded the hereditary title of Kazusa Gonnosuke and ruled over parts of Kazusa and Shimousa. He joined the forces of Minamoto no Yoshitomo during the Hogen and Heiji Rebellions. In 1189, he accompanied Minamoto no Yoritomo, who raised an army, with an army of 20,000 men. He played a central role in the attack on the Satake clan in Hitachi (Ibaraki Prefecture). He was later suspected of treason and killed on December 22, 1182. His nickname was Kaihachiro.

世襲の上総権介(かずさのごんのすけ)をつぎ,上総と下総(しもうさ)の一部を支配。保元(ほうげん)・平治(へいじ)の乱では源義朝の軍にくわわる。治承(じしょう)4年挙兵した源頼朝に,2万の大軍をひきいてしたがう。常陸(ひたち)(茨城県)の佐竹氏攻めでは中心となった。のち謀反の疑いをうけ,寿永2年12月22日殺された。通称は介八郎。
