A village in Kashima County in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 10,856 (1995). Facing the Kashima Nada Sea to the east and Lake Kitaura to the west, the Kashima Plateau spreads out in the center. In the past, wheat, sweet potatoes, and peanuts were the main agricultural crops, but in recent years, vegetable production such as prince melons, bell peppers, and mitsuba (Japanese hogwort) has increased, as has pig farming. The lowlands facing Lake Kitaura are used as rice paddies, and people from coastal settlements are also farming the land. Smelt fishing has declined in Lake Kitaura, and carp farming is now practiced. With the development of the Kashima coastal industrial zone, the population has been increasing since the early 1970s, and construction of an industrial complex is also underway.
