The name of the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). Hokkaido, 30.5 km between Tomakomai and Mukawa, single track, non-electrified. Branching off from the Muroran Main Line at Tomakomai, located in the Yufutsu Plain. Previously, the line ran 146.5 km between Tomakomai and Samani along the Hidaka coast. In 1913 (Taisho 2), the Tomakomai Light Railway (which took over from the Mitsui Bussan Private Railway, which opened in 1910) opened between Tomakomai and Tomikawa (formerly Sarubuto), and from 1924 to 1926, the Hidaka Takushoku Railway opened between Tomikawa and Shizunai. Both were light railways with a gauge of 762 mm. Their main function was to transport logs for Oji Paper's Tomakomai factory, and in 1927 (Showa 2), both railways were nationalized and became the Hidaka Line. After nationalization, the gauge was converted to 1067 mm in 1929 and 1931, and the Shizunai-Samani section was extended and opened with a 1067 mm gauge line from the beginning between 1933 and 1937. In 1943, it became the Hidaka Main Line. Although it is called the main line, it is a completely local line. In 1987 (Showa 62), following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), it became part of JR Hokkaido. After becoming part of JR, it continued to operate between Tomakomai and Samani, but was frequently suspended due to natural disasters. In 2015, the 116.0 km section between Mukawa and Samani was closed due to landslides caused by high waves, and discussions continued with local governments along the line to restore it, but due to the large amount of funding required, it was decided to discontinue railway service on that section and replace it with bus service. As a result, transportation operations on that section were discontinued in April 2021.

北海道旅客鉄道(JR北海道)の線路名称。北海道、苫小牧(とまこまい)―鵡川(むかわ)間30.5キロメートル、全線単線、非電化。勇払(ゆうふつ)平野に位置する苫小牧で室蘭(むろらん)本線より分岐する。以前は日高海岸沿いに苫小牧―様似(さまに)間146.5キロメートルを走る路線であった。1913年(大正2)苫小牧軽便鉄道(1910年開通の三井物産専用鉄道を譲り受けた)が苫小牧―富川(とみかわ)(旧、佐瑠太(さるぶと))間に、1924~1926年日高拓殖鉄道が富川―静内(しずない)間にそれぞれ開業し、ともに軌間762ミリメートルの軽便鉄道であった。王子製紙苫小牧工場向けの原木輸送に主たる機能があり、1927年(昭和2)両鉄道とも国有化されて日高線となった。国有化後、軌間1067ミリメートルへの改軌が1929年、1931年に実施され、1933~1937年には静内―様似間が最初から1067ミリメートル軌間線として延長開業。1943年日高本線となった。なお、本線とは称されるが、まったくのローカル線である。1987年(昭和62)、日本国有鉄道(国鉄)の分割民営化に伴い、JR北海道に所属。JR所属後も苫小牧―様似間で営業が続けられたが、自然災害によりたびたび運休となった。2015年(平成27)に高波による土砂流出で鵡川―様似間116.0キロメートルが不通になり、復旧に向けて沿線自治体と協議が続けられたが、多額の資金を必要とすることから、同区間の鉄道廃止、バス転換が決定された。それを受けて2021年(令和3)4月に同区間の運輸営業を廃止した。
