Thus, from the 1950s to the 1960s, new theater as a modern realistic style matured and spread, but from the latter half of the 1960s, doubts and objections to this modern realistic theater and the existing new theater companies began to be expressed, and a period of change began to appear in new theater, and in the Japanese theater world as a whole. The driving force behind this was the rise of the so-called "underground small theaters" (avant-garde theaters), such as the Situation Theater, Waseda Small Theater, Free Theater, Tenjo Sajiki, and Sakurasha, which coincided with the university protests of 1968 and 1969. At the same time, there were also a series of splits and withdrawals from the existing new theater companies.

　こうして1950年代から60年代にかけて，近代的写実様式としての新劇の成熟と普及が行われたが，60年代も後半に入るころから，この近代写実演劇や既成新劇団のあり方に対する疑義表明や異議申立てが盛んになり，新劇の，あるいは日本の演劇界全体の，一つの転形期が現出することとなる。その原動力となったのは，いわゆる〈アングラ小劇場〉(前衛劇)といわれた〈状況劇場〉〈早稲田小劇場〉〈自由劇場〉〈天井桟敷〉〈桜社〉などの台頭で，それは68,69年の大学闘争期と時期的に重なり合うものであった。一方，そのころには，既成新劇団の側の分裂や脱退事件も相次いだ。…
