Thus, from the 1950s to the 1960s, new theater as a modern realistic style matured and spread, but from the latter half of the 1960s, doubts and objections to this modern realistic theater and the existing new theater companies began to be expressed, and a period of change began to appear in new theater, and in the Japanese theater world as a whole. The driving force behind this was the rise of the so-called "underground small theaters" (avant-garde theaters), such as the Situation Theater, Waseda Small Theater, Free Theater, Tenjo Sajiki, and Sakurasha, which coincided with the university protests of 1968 and 1969. At the same time, there were also a series of splits and withdrawals from the existing new theater companies.
