He is one of the most noteworthy writers in Indian Urdu literature since Premchand. Born in Wazirabad, Punjab, he spent his childhood in Kashmir. He studied English literature and law in Lahore, and began writing novels in earnest at the age of 23. He is considered a progressive writer, and his writing career moved from an early romanticist inclination to the turmoil of the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, focusing on works that criticize political ideology, social systems, religion, and tradition, producing shocking works such as the short story collection Ham Vaśśī Hain (1947).
