…In 1853 (Kaei 6), an American fleet arrived at Uraga, and in 1858, the shogunate concluded commercial treaties with five countries, including the United States, and the Prussian government also sent a fleet to East Asia with the aim of trade with Japan, China, and Siam (Thailand). Friedrich Albrecht Graf zu Eulenburg (1815-81), Count of Eulenburg (later Minister of the Interior of Prussia), was appointed head of the mission, and the Arkona and three other ships set sail in 1859. One of the ships, the Frauenlob, was shipwrecked near Japan, but the other ships arrived off the coast of Edo one after the other in September of the following year, and the mission entered a reception center in Shiba Akabane (now Higashi-Azabu). The shogunate rejected the Prussian request for trade, citing that foreign trade had already caused economic turmoil, such as rising prices. …
