A city in northwest Florida, United States, and the state capital. Population 150,624 (2000). Surrounded by agricultural coastal plains, where vegetables and cotton are grown, and hills scattered among them are forested, lumber and woodworking products, and food processing industries are thriving. Florida State University, Florida Agricultural and Technical University, and the state government are major employers. When Spanish explorer De Soto arrived here in 1539, Appalachian Indian settlements had developed here. In 1824, it became the capital of the Florida Territory, and after implementing policies to expel the native Indians, its population increased, and it became a city the following year. It became the state capital when statehood was achieved in 1845. It is a beautiful city with buildings from before the Civil War remaining.
