Dainichido Bugaku

Japanese:
Dainichido Bugaku

This Bugaku dance is performed on the second day of the New Year at Dainichido Hall in Azukisawa, Hachimantai, Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture. It is also called Zaido (Festival Hall). The festival is held by four villages, Azukisawa, Oosato, Nagamine, and Taniuchi, and the dance performances are assigned to each village according to tradition. They are Mikomai (four villages), Kanatemai (same), Gongenmai (Azukisawa), Komamai (Azukisawa), Uhenmai (Nagamine), Torimai (Azukisawa), Koushomai (also called Bajjidomai, Oosato), Dengakumai (Azukisawa), and Godaisonmai (Taniuchi). Before the Meiji Restoration, hereditary heads such as the betto and Ichinotaniwa of Azusawa, the Kagoya of Ozato, and the Obakkase of Taniuchi were paid stipends by the Nanbu family. The pieces performed are different from those of Bugaku in the central area, and the dance has a unique form of art with strong folk influences linked to local beliefs. In 1976 (Showa 51), it was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Furthermore, in 2009, it was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
