A general term for African xylophones, and a type of xylophone derived from it. Originating in Africa, it was brought to Latin America and then America, where it was improved in modern times. The etymology is a combination of the prefix "ma" indicating plural in African Bantu languages and "limba" meaning "flat object". After 1910, various improvements were made in America, and since the 1940s, it has established a firm position as a Western instrument in jazz and orchestral music. It has a form in which rosewood sound bars are arranged in a chromatic scale on a frame, and a metal or wooden resonator is attached under each sound bar, and it has a range of about three octaves from C3 onwards. It is played by striking two rubber-tipped sticks held in both hands. In some parts of Africa, the sanza, a reciprocating idiophone, is also called by this name.
