Marimba - Marimba (English spelling)

A general term for African xylophones, and a type of xylophone derived from it. Originating in Africa, it was brought to Latin America and then America, where it was improved in modern times. The etymology is a combination of the prefix "ma" indicating plural in African Bantu languages ​​and "limba" meaning "flat object". After 1910, various improvements were made in America, and since the 1940s, it has established a firm position as a Western instrument in jazz and orchestral music. It has a form in which rosewood sound bars are arranged in a chromatic scale on a frame, and a metal or wooden resonator is attached under each sound bar, and it has a range of about three octaves from _C3 onwards. It is played by striking two rubber-tipped sticks held in both hands. In some parts of Africa, the sanza, a reciprocating idiophone, is also called by this name.

アフリカ系の木琴の総称、およびそれに由来する木琴の一種。アフリカ起源で、ラテンアメリカ、さらにアメリカに持ち込まれて近代的に改良された。語源は、アフリカのバントゥー諸語の複数を示す接頭辞「マ」と「平らな物体」を意味する「リンバ」を組み合わせたものにある。1910年以後アメリカで数々の改良が加えられ、40年代以降、西洋楽器としてジャズや管弦楽で確固たる地位を築いた。ローズウッド製の音板を枠の上に半音階で配列し、各音板の下に金属製または木製の共鳴管を取り付けた形態で、通常C₃から上へ約3オクターブの音域をもつ。先端が生ゴム製の2本の桴(ばち)を両手に持って打奏する。なお、アフリカでは摘奏(てきそう)体鳴楽器サンザをこの名称でよぶ地域もある。
