Daniel Casper von Lohenstein

Daniel Casper von Lohenstein
1635‐83
A writer of the German Baroque period. He wrote a series of tragedies, including Cleopatra (1661) and Sophonisbe (1680), modelled on Seneca and French classical drama, but because his style was full of excessive ornamentation, exaggeration, rhetorical techniques and garish realism, he was forgotten in literary history for the next two centuries. However, in recent years, interest has been focused on his interpretation of the complex psychology of women and his understanding of history. [Shimada Masaru]
