Tochigiyama Moriya

The 27th Yokozuna. A disciple of Yokozuna Hitachiyama (later Dewanoumi). Born in what is now Fujioka-cho, Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, he entered the sumo world at the age of 18. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he achieved the feat of preventing Tachiyama's 57 consecutive wins, and in January 1918, after two tournaments as an ozeki, he was promoted to Yokozuna. He was a master of the hasu-oshi technique, won nine tournaments (five in a row), was 1.72 meters tall and weighed 105 kilograms. He retired in 1925 and took the name of Toshiyori Kasugano. He trained Kashima Hiroshi, Shintozan, Sagamigawa, Tochinishiki, and Tochinoumi (1938-2021), and contributed to the rise of sumo as a supervisor of the Sumo Association. Posthumously, he became the first former sumo wrestler to be awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fourth Class.
