709-795 Islamic jurist. Founder of the Maliki school, one of the four Sunni schools of law. Both his grandfather and father were known as scholars in Medina, and he himself was born, studied, and died in Medina. Even during his lifetime, he had great influence as a leader of the early Medina school of law. The Abbasid Caliphs often consulted him on legal matters, and Caliph Harun al-Rashid paid him a courtesy visit at his home during his pilgrimage. His main work is Kitāb al-Muwaṭṭa'.
